jtonline can reveal that today, Firebox announced the arrival of the Peppermint Green VW Camper Van Tent. This brand new addition to the gadget range will surely turn heads across festivals this summer as mint green is set to be the summer trend. Say goodbye to dull, conventional tents and be make your friends green with envy.

Firebox launched the original VW Camper Van Tent last year to worldwide acclaim, with the item racking up over 120K ‘Likes’ on Facebook. The ‘tent that think’s it’s a camper van’ was actually the retailer’s most successful product launch and was, as one commentator put it, “simply a brilliant idea”.

Officially licensed, the four-man tent is a luxe, full-size replica of the legendary 1965 VW Camper Van; synonymous with 1960’s hippies, surfer dudes and boho culture. Not only is the tent large enough for campers to stand up in but it’s incredibly sturdy and brilliantly weather proof too – with a 3000mm fabric roof (British Military grade is only 800mm) and 1000mm thick fabric side.

Ben Redhead, Sports & Outdoors Buyer at Firebox says, “We have high hopes for the VW Camper Van Tent for 2012 as, despite not yet seeing a festival season, this retro-warrior was consistently one of our best-sellers for 2011. We expect the latest, perfectly-on-trend, Peppermint Green version to also be a hit and join its colourful companions across festivals and campsites this summer.”

The VW Camper Van Tent in peppermint green is available to pre-order from Firebox now, priced £299. The tent is already available in Blue and Red on the Firebox website.

Review of the Bose MIE2i mobile headset, made for iPod, iPhone and iPad...

Recently I found myself in need of some replacement in-ear headphones for my Apple iPhone 4, and after a bit of research I settled on the Bose® MIE2i mobile headset.

I couldn’t try the headset out prior to purchase, so I had to go on brand reputation and on-line customer feedback comments. However, it was reassuring to know that Bose offer a risk free trial period. If you feel the product just isn’t right for you, simply call them within 30 days of purchase to arrange a return. Bose will collect the product from your home address – at their expense – and you will receive a full refund.

There are three models of in-ear headphones in the Bose IE2 range. The IE2 are straightforward audio headphones, whilst the MIE2 and MIE2i are mobile headsets for music and calls, with the latter also having iPod/iPhone control.

With a Bose MIE2i mobile headset you can take calls on your iPhone with one-touch ease and then switch back to your music at the touch of a button. With an integrated inline remote located on the back of the microphone, you can adjust volume, play/pause tracks, skip tracks forward/backward, fast forward/rewind and change playlists — and you need never miss a call. The remote/mic is located on the wire that goes up to the right-hand earpiece and there’s the facility to clip the wire to your clothing so you don’t need to hold the mic during a call.

There are one set of small, medium and large proprietary StayHear® ear tips provided (replacements can be purchased on-line). Once I’d chosen and fitted the correct size of tips for my ears, the earpieces nestle inside the bowl of the ear quite naturally and securely. Don’t be tempted to try and push the tip deep into your ear canal as you might with conventional in-ear headphones.

It’s worth noting that this headset is not designed to be noise cancelling, so whilst wearing them you can still hear what’s going on around you to a certain degree. So far, I haven’t found this to be a problem. They are not water resistant either, so the controls may not stand up to repeated sweaty gym sessions.

The headset cable is terminated with an angled 3.5mm plug that fits directly into mobile phones with recessed jacks.

There’s an Owner’s Guide in the box and a rectangular zipped case included that can accommodate an iPhone and the headset. The headset cable tends to get a bit tangled up when I use the case, and as I already have an iPhone cover, I would have preferred Bose to have come up with a better solution for storing the headset when not in use.

I wanted lifelike sound quality that wasn’t too bass heavy, comfortable ear pieces that stayed put, good build quality and the ability to make and receive calls without having to unplug the headphones from the phone jack. I’m pleased to say I haven’t been disappointed with my Bose MIE2i mobile headset purhcase.

Compatibility:

The MIE2i headset is compatible with iPhone (3GS and later), iPod touch (2nd generation and later), iPod classic (120GB and 160GB), iPod nano (4th generation and later) and iPod shuffle (3rd generation and later). The headset is also compatible with iPad, MacBook (unibody) and MacBook Pro (excluding MacBook Air).

Dimensions:

Headphones (one side, with StayHear tip)
3.3 cm (H) x 2.59 cm (W) x 1.5 cm (D)

Cable length from ear bud to headphone plug
115 cm

Weight with cables (two sides, medium tips)
19 g

Drivers are increasingly bewildered by the vast array of hi-tech buttons, knobs and switches in their cars...

Drivers are apparently increasingly bewildered by the vast array of hi-tech buttons, knobs and switches in their cars.

Last month, a survey from Halfords of 2168 motorists, discovered a new phenomenon – ‘Dashboard Dread’ where motorists become anxious because they can’t recognise warning symbols or don’t know how to use some of their controls.

One in three (32%) admitted to ‘panicking’ if a red light flashed up and only one in four (24%) was able to correctly say what each switch and lever in the car was and when it should be used. A disturbing one in ten drivers (9.8%) had no idea where the fog lights were located.

Even more complex automotive engineering and the rise of in-car gadgetry means there can be as many as 50 different functions on an average saloon such as the Ford Mondeo Titanium.

The steering wheel alone can have 14 different functions to manage the radio, cruise control or mobile phone and three levers on the steering column. There are more buttons on the side arm rests for the wing mirrors and windows and different controls for the lights.

Then there is complex in-car entertainment with an array of pre-set buttons, bluetooth and a USB socket. Plus cutting edge aids in more sophisticated models to help parking , changing lanes and ‘smart’ dashboards with touch screen Internet built in.

The Halfords survey found motorists are also baffled by vehicle warning signs. One in four (26%) can’t recognise the symbol showing that a tyre is losing pressure and a worrying one in five (20%) did not know what the red brake system alert light meant.

Two thirds of drivers confessed they had never looked at the handbook so had little hope of recognising many of the wide range warning signs that flash up on the instrument panel. Even the most basic Ford Focus Zetec, for example, lists 30 different symbols.

The study was commissioned by Halfords to alert motorists to new mandatory checks on warning light symbols which are now included in the MOT test.

Rory Carlin of Halfords Autocentres said: “Many cars now have more warning lights than ever before, and we would encourage customers to check their meaning – especially as illumination of some of these lights can lead to MOT failure.”

“Arming yourself with some basic knowledge and taking swift, corrective action, saves time, money and in extreme cases, lives.”

Britons have reacted to the big freeze which finally hit the UK sending temperatures plummeting and covering large parts of the country in snow.

Car accessory retailer Halfords reports drivers stocking up on break down kits, de-icers, anti-freeze, scrapers and snow shovels.

Householders are also determined not to get caught out with a rush on bags of salt to ensure paths and driveways remain clear.

Weather forecasters have warned that the Arctic blast could last for the rest of the month with sub-zero temperatures predicted for large swathes of the country.

The Met Office and the Highways Agency have both issued Amber Alerts, the second highest rating for cold weather. They also warned of transport disruption as cold temperatures refreeze thawing snow, leading to black ice that makes roads extremely hazardous.

Halfords said sales of snow shovels were at their highest ever while demand for de-icer sales was quadruple this time last year, de-icing salt was up 155%, anti-freeze up 94%, and purchases of ice scrapers increased by 75%. Screenwash a staple need for motorists in winter conditions is also selling strongly,

Halfords winter products expert Mark Dolphin said: “Snow and Freezing weather is always very disruptive for motorists. There’s always a huge demand for all the products that help people stay on the road. It’s not just the de-icing products that are needed, a lot more batteries and wiper blades fail so our store colleagues are very busy replacing these for customers.”

A survey carried out by Halfords at the start of Winter found more than four in ten (42%) claimed to be better organised than last year when the country was hit by the lowest temperatures for 15 years.

Thousands of car owners have splashed out on winter tyres and taken advantage of garages offering “winter checks”.

Canon announced two new versatile and powerful PowerShot SX digital camera models today...

Canon announced two new versatile and powerful PowerShot SX digital camera models today – the PowerShot SX260 HS and PowerShot SX240 HS. Combining sleek, modern design with an impressive 20x optical zoom and advanced imaging technologies, these models are the ideal travel companions for recording everything, from family holidays on tropical beaches to action-packed adventures, in stunning detail and Full HD video.

Available in four[1] cool colours for the PowerShot SX260 HS and three[2] for the PowerShot SX240 HS, the new models are the world’s slimmest[3] in their class and offer Canon’s signature high image quality thanks to the DIGIC 5-powered HS System and new Intelligent IS technology, in a compact, pocket-friendly body. The PowerShot SX260 HS also features integrated GPS, making it even easier to record your travels and retrace your route on a map from the comfort of your armchair when you return home.

Super zoom, super quality
Whether it’s the holiday of a lifetime or a precious family moment, the PowerShot SX260 HS and PowerShot SX240 HS are designed to bring you closer to the action than ever before thanks to the enhanced 25mm wide-angle 20x optical zoom Canon lens with 4-stop optical Image Stabilizer (IS). New ZoomPlus technology further extends the reach of the zoom to 39x by harnessing the processing power of DIGIC 5 and the high resolution sensor to produce a more accurate and detailed digital zoom.

Complementing the impressive optical zoom, Canon’s new Intelligent IS technology ensures crisp, detailed images and smooth footage in a range of shooting situations. By identifying the scene and subject to be captured, the camera selects the most appropriate IS settings from seven[4] modes for steady, blur-free shots. For example, Macro IS is great for capturing those crystal clear close-up shots of exotic plants or insects, whilst Powered IS makes it easier to film distant subjects with the powerful zoom – perfect for recording wildlife on safari.

The HS System, which pairs Canon’s next-generation DIGIC 5 image processor with the 12.1 Megapixel high-sensitivity CMOS sensor, has been further augmented to ensure outstanding, low-noise images in all conditions, particularly in low light. Whether on a beach in the moonlight or at a party, pictures are well-exposed with up to 75% less noise than the models’ predecessors, without the need to use a flash or tripod.

Point-and-shoot ease of use
The PowerShot SX260 HS and PowerShot SX240 HS provide total freedom, offering Canon’s acclaimed Smart Auto mode which now detects up to 58 different scenes to determine the most appropriate settings to achieve the best possible result.
Advanced Multi-area White Balance technology detects multiple light sources and corrects the colour balance for each, removing unsightly colour casts to give more natural results.

With new Face Identification (Face ID), your friends and family will always look their best in your photos, even if they are in a large group or at the edge of the frame. Simply register up to 12 faces in the camera and include their birthdays to enable some of the new age-related scenes added to Smart Auto. For example, when taking a shot of a sleeping baby, the camera will disengage the flash and audio cues in order to avoid disturbing its sleep and apply specific exposure settings to produce a similar result to the bright “high-key effect” portraits favoured by professional photographers. Similarly, in the case of a child over the age of two playing outdoors, the camera will anticipate more movement and engages servo AF to ensure focus, then shoots a short high-speed burst to increase the chances of capturing a perfect moment. Face ID will also tag your images with the names of your subjects, allowing you to search your image library by name for swifter browsing, both on the camera and on your computer using the supplied ImageBrowser EX software[5].

Explore your creative side with confidence
For maximum flexibility, the PowerShot SX260 HS and PowerShot SX240 HS both offer full manual control, allowing users to stamp their own creativity on their shots and explore the impact of individual changes to ISO, shutter speed or aperture on their images.

The sensor and image processor combination not only provide superior image quality but also support high-speed shooting functions. Freeze fast-paced action with High-speed Burst HQ, shooting full-resolution images at 10.3 shots/sec, or slow the pace right down with 240fps Super Slow Motion Movie. Alternatively, give your low-light photography an added boost with Handheld Night Scene which combines a high-speed sequence of shots into one image offering the least possible blur and best possible exposure.

The enhanced Creative Filters in the PowerShot SX260 HS and PowerShot SX240 HS mean you can add a new level of creative fun with eight effects[6] to make your photos and videos stand out. Add a romantic touch with the new Soft Focus, and produce perfect portraits with the Smooth Skin setting which evens out skin tone for a more flattering effect. Alternatively, change the way you look at landscapes with Miniature Effect making the scene resemble a scale model.

Remember every step
Build a unique travel journal and relive each moment by tagging each picture with the local time and location it was taken automatically with the built-in GPS[7] in the PowerShot SX260 HS. The integrated GPS Logger function has been enhanced compared with its predecessor, logging the location of the camera at regular intervals more rapidly and offering more than 48 hours tracking on a single charge. Using the Map Utility software included, you can then view your journey on Google Maps or share it with friends and family across the world through applications such as Google Earth[8].

Both models allow you to create a ‘behind the scenes’ mini-film of the day’s images with the improved Movie Digest feature, which records the last four seconds of action before each shot is taken and combines them into a single movie – a great alternative way to tell the story behind your perfect pictures in HD (720p) quality.

The traveller’s companion
The robust metal body and compact, lightweight design ensure both the PowerShot SX260 HS and PowerShot SX240 HS are ideal for holidays and capturing important events.

Switch quickly and easily between photos and filming with just one touch to record the action in Full HD (1080p) with stereo sound. Fine Detail Movie Processing technology ensures every sensor pixel is employed in Movie mode to capture incredible detail, allowing you to relive each moment on an HD screen. The huge 20x optical zoom can also be used whilst filming to get closer to the action and Intelligent IS ensures that footage shot even at the furthest extent of the telephoto zoom is smooth and shake-free.

You can continue to capture great images in religious monuments or museums without disturbing other visitors thanks to Discreet mode and with the optional waterproof case, you can also take your camera to depths down to 40m – capturing all the beautiful scenery both above and below the waves. The bright 7.5 cm (3.0”) PureColor II G LCD screen with approximately 460,000 dots of resolution and a tempered glass layer, for improved viewing and protection against the bumps and knocks of travel, also allows you to review your movies and images in rich colour and crisp detail.

Join the CANON iMAGE GATEWAY community
Owners of these new models can also join the newly updated CANON iMAGE GATEWAY, an online facility for sharing photos and video now providing up to 10 GB of personal storage capacity, perfect for storing many photos, even in full resolution.

The Canon PowerShot D20 digital camera was announced today – engineered to be a part of the adventure and capture exceptional images and Full HD (1080p) video when living life to the extreme. Housing advanced Canon imaging technology in a robust and sporty body, the PowerShot D20 is waterproof, shockproof, freezeproof and dustproof – ideal for hurtling down the rapids or conquering a mountain and bringing back the photos to prove it.

The PowerShot D20 is packed full of versatiletechnology including the advanced HS System, designed to produce fantastic picture quality, even in challenging low-light conditions. Sliding easily into a rucksack or attached to a carabiner, the PowerShot D20 is compact, lightweight and built to withstand the rigours of any adventure – freeing users to push themselves to the limits without worrying about their camera coping with the ride.

Canon-quality with every shot
The heart of the PowerShot D20 is powered by Canon’s HS System, combining a 12.1 Megapixel, high-sensitivity CMOS sensor with the DIGIC 4 image processor for high-quality performance in every situation – particularly in low-light situations.

Whether exploring the underwater beauty of an exotic cove or standing on top of the world after a mountain trek, glorious scenic vistas can be captured in their entirety thanks to the high-quality 28mm wide-angle Canon lens, with 5x zoom to bring users closer to the action. For rock-steady videos and crisp stills even in challenging shooting conditions, Intelligent IS automatically analyses the scene and selects the optimum settings for the optical Image Stabilizer from seven different modes[1]. For example, when filming movies off the beaten trail, Dynamic IS mode compensates for both hand shake and movement. Panning IS mode is perfect when shooting a flock of birds crossing the scene, ensuring the IS system stabilises in only one direction, while Macro IS mode is perfect for shooting the stunning detail of a starfish on a coral reef.

Breathe new life into shooting beneath the waves and capture the rare sights and close-up detail with the special Underwater Macro mode, combined with Quick AF mode to ensure rapid and accurate focus. The accuracy of Underwater White Balance is enhanced and also offers quick adjustment so that users can shoot the depths with beautiful natural colours. Allowing intrepid travellers to push the limits even further and dive into a new world, the optional WP-DC45 waterproof case with external flash support enables the PowerShot D20 to capture rare sights at depths down to 40m.

Handheld Night Scene mode means users can shoot dark scenes with confidence. It captures a series of high-speed shots and combines them into one crisp, well-exposed image. Giving more freedom for users to be creative, Super Slow Motion Movie mode can add tension and draw out the suspense in fast-paced events.

Ready to go whenever and wherever you may be
Rugged enough to brave the elements, the PowerShot D20 is waterproof to depths down to 10m, and can withstand freezing temperatures down to -10°C. Active Display technology also allows users to control some camera functions by tapping the camera body, making it easier to use when wearing gloves. Built to last, the PowerShot D20 is also shockproof from drops up to 1.5m and environmentally sealed against sand and dust to protect the advanced imaging technology inside.

Those who wish to blaze a trail and map out the adventure for others to follow can use GPS[2] tagging and the low energy consumption[3] GPS Logger feature. These can be used to tag images with location data or track routes and share discoveries easily using the supplied Map Utility software and through Google Earth[4]. Retelling the story behind a stunning shot is now even easier with Movie Digest mode creating a ‘making-of’ film reel for a day’s images. When engaged, this mode films the last 4 seconds before each photo is taken in 720p HD resolution and combines all the clips from that day to create a movie that allows users to document their experiences in a new and exciting way.

When things happen fast, the PowerShot D20 is always ready to go. The dedicated Movie Record button means users can switch instantly to Full HD 1080p movie quality and zero in on the action with the 5x optical zoom without missing a moment. Users can then relive the experience on a big screen thanks to the HDMI connection with CEC, allowing them to pause, rewind and replay any clip using the remote control of a compatible HDTV.

Easy to use, easy to explore
Even when the action is fast and furious, frame the scene perfectly with just a glance at the bright, vibrant 7.5 cm (3.0”) 460,000 dot PureColor II LCD screen with 4:3 aspect ratio. It’s also easier than ever to capture great images without needing extensive photography experience thanks to Canon’s enhanced Smart Auto feature which detects 32 different scenes, applying the best combination of camera settings to ensure every shot is well-exposed.

The PowerShot D20 features seven[5] creative effects that can be applied to give every shot new impact, allowing photographers to explore the world and change how people view it. Landscapes offer the impression of a scale model with Miniature Effect or similar effects to those of a fish-eye lens can be applied to present a completely unique view of the world.

Accessories for adventure
The optional Accessory Kit includes Carabiner and Shoulder Straps to keep the camera handy when hiking or climbing, a special Neoprene Pouch and a Silicon Jacket for even more protection, as well as a Float to keep the camera at the surface when swimming, making the PowerShot D20 ready for many adventures.

Canon today adds to its premium IXUS range with the launch of two new outstanding touch screen models – the IXUS 510 HS and the IXUS 240 HS. Fusing first-class design with Canon’s signature image quality and new Wi-Fi functionality, both models make it easier than ever to shoot photos and Full HD movies in exceptional detail and share them instantly with friends and family. Combining a high quality and compact 12x optical zoom with a highly-pocketable, luxurious and chic design, the IXUS 510 HS is the perfect take anywhere camera for style-conscious users, while the IXUS 240 HS’s slim and elegant design and fun functionality are ideal for shooting and sharing images, anytime and anywhere.

Quality meets design
Canon’s advanced imaging technology ensures superb results, no matter the subject being shot or the conditions. Both models feature cutting-edge genuine Canon lens technology, enabling the capture of sweeping vistas or distant detail with the powerful zooms in each camera. The IXUS 510 HS’s impressive 28mm wide-angle 12x optical zoom lens packs into a body measuring just 19.8 mm front-to-back, while the IXUS 240 HS’s 24mm ultra-wide-angle 5x optical zoom lens comes in a high-grade, super-slim body – offering exceptional quality and versatility. Canon’s ZoomPlus technology means users can extend the zoom of their camera and get even closer to the action, while maintaining higher quality than traditional digital zoom. With ZoomPlus, the IXUS 510 HS’ zoom extends beyond its 12x optical zoom to 21x, while the IXUS 240 HS reaches past its 5x optical zoom to 10x.

The IXUS 510 HS and IXUS 240 HS also feature Canon’s Intelligent IS, providing advanced image stabilisation that offers the freedom to shoot a range of subjects with confidence. Harnessing each model’s 3.5-stop optical Image Stabilizer, Intelligent IS rapidly analyses the shooting scene and automatically adjusts the camera’s settings, selecting from seven¹ different stabilisation modes to ensure photos and movies remain clear and with minimal blur.

Powered by Canon’s HS System, which optimally combines high resolution, high-sensitivity CMOS sensors with next-generation DIGIC 5 processing, both models offer image quality that reflects what the eye sees. Offering supreme performance in all conditions, and especially in low light, both the IXUS 510 HS and IXUS 240 HS allow users to capture and share experiences with incredible levels of detail and clarity.

Sharing made easy
With the new models, users can instantly share their favourite images and movies, whenever and wherever they may be thanks to new integrated Wi-Fi connectivity². The new CameraWindow application allows photos and movies to be wirelessly transferred directly to a range of Apple iOS³ mobile devices for instant sharing on the move. Using the same application, users can also share photos via email, upload them to Facebook with their own comments, or even upload movies to YouTube™.

Also launching today with the new IXUS models is the newly designed and enhanced CANON iMAGE GATEWAY, Canon’s online facility for sharing photos and video. Now providing up to 10 GB of personal storage capacity, it is perfect for storing many photos, even in full resolution. An easy interface allows users to search for images, create combined photo and movie Albums that can receive comments from friends, and to share Albums directly via email and Social Networking Sites. With the new Wi-Fi IXUS models, photos can be uploaded directly to the CANON iMAGE GATEWAY without the need for a computer, using just the cameras’ wireless menus and home wireless networks.

Complete control at your fingertips
Both models feature large, bright and vibrant 8.0 cm (3.2”) PureColor II Touch LCD displays with sharp 460,000-dot resolution, giving exceptional colours and accurate contrast. They are ideal for reviewing newly-captured images and movies and showcasing them to friends. The highly responsive touch navigation and customisable on-screen icons provide quick, easy access to camera settings, menus and a user’s entire photo collection, so photos can be quickly selected to upload to social networks and comments even typed in. The touchscreen also powers Canon’s Touch Shutter functionality which makes it possible to compose and shoot with a single touch of the screen.

Point and shoot creativity
For those who like to point and shoot for excellent images, Canon’s latest Smart Auto mode now identifies up to 58 different scenes.

The new Face Identification (Face ID) functionality included within Smart Auto enables users to get the best possible shots of friends and family, making it easy to capture tricky subjects with new levels of clarity. Face ID allows users to register family faces and their birthdays within the camera, it then stores this information, and with Smart Auto adjusts image settings accordingly. For example, when taking a picture of a sleeping baby, Face ID will identify the subject, automatically disengage the flash and adjust the exposure to give the image a brighter feel. If a child over the age of two is identified, the camera will automatically engage Servo AF in anticipation of movement, enabling sharper pictures of children that are often difficult to capture. Users can even browse their photos in-camera by name, so images of their friends and family can be easily and quickly searched and reviewed.

Each model also features Multi-area White Balance which detects multiple light sources and corrects the colour balance for each, delivering natural images in challenging conditions featuring multiple light sources. An enhanced range of creative shooting modes also expands the gamut of effects users can explore, with two new modes added. In addition to Toy Camera, Miniature and Fish-eye Effect, new Smooth Skin Effect improves portraits by smoothing out skin textures, while Soft Focus Effect simulates the dreamy effect provided by a dedicated soft-focus lens. Both new modes offer three effect levels, enabling the user to pick a level to suit the subject.

High resolution stills, high defintion video
In addition to exceptional stills, the new IXUS 510 HS and IXUS 240 HS feature Full HD (1080p) movie recording with stereo sound. A dedicated movie record button enables instant switching from stills to movies, while optical zoom can also be utilised in both cameras in movies. Integrated HDMI connectivity also enables sharing with friends and family using HD TV screens. To help tell the story behind a day’s images, Movie Digest mode captures four seconds of movie before each still shot is taken and then merges all the clips together in HD (720p) quality for a fun reminder of the day’s events.

The IXUS 510 HS: Seriously compact, catwalk style
As well as offering stand-out image quality, the IXUS 510 HS takes IXUS style to a new high. With a 10.1MP high-sensitivity CMOS sensor and exceptional 12x optical zoom, users can enjoy the flexibility to capture a range of subjects in exceptional quality, and then share images instantly using the integrated Wi-Fi connectivity. Revisiting the classic style of the original IXUS design, the IXUS 510 HS’s sleek, sharp-edged exterior truly epitomises the IXUS luxury design philosophy, offering a stylish, compact body that can be taken anywhere. The futuristic lens cover and brushed matte finish, available in striking black or white, also adds to the premium styling.

The IXUS 240 HS: Exceptional style and ease-of-use
Combining advanced features with effortless functionality, the IXUS 240 HS is perfect for anyone looking for a camera that fuses style with substance. Its 16.1 MP resolution offers exceptional detail, while its ultra-wide angle 24mm 5x optical zoom genuine Canon lens offers great flexibility that can be carried in virtually any pocket. Available in five contemporary metallic colours so users can pick a style to match their personality, the IXUS 240 HS is ideal for social shooting, such as holidays or evenings out with friends – allowing high quality images to be shared immediately after they are taken.

Canon today adds to its world-famous EF lens series with the launch of three new lenses for photography professionals and enthusiasts...

Canon today adds to its world-famous EF lens series with the launch of three new lenses for photography professionals and enthusiasts. The new EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM professional zoom lens is an update to the popular EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM, while the new EF 24mm f/2.8 IS USM and EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM are the world’s first¹ wide-angle prime lenses to feature optical Image Stabilizer (IS) technology. All three provide the highest levels of performance for modern digital photographers, combining premium image quality with durable, user-friendly designs.

The new EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM features completely redesigned optics to provide outstanding clarity, image quality and durability. A compact design makes it ideal for carrying on every shoot, and a range of optical enhancements provide improved performance – capturing greater detail across the frame while reducing distortion throughout the entire zoom range, particularly at the maximum 70mm focal length.

With a redesigned optical system that includes two Ultra-low Dispersion (UD) and one Super UD aspheric elements to minimise chromatic aberration and colour blurring, the lens delivers consistently sharp, high-contrast images. Each lens element also features Canon’s optimised Super Spectra coatings to reduce ghosting and flare and ensure excellent colour balance. Additionally, a fluorine coating minimises the amount of dust, dirt and fingerprints that adhere to the front and rear of the lens, helping to maintain superior image quality.

The EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM also enables photographers to capture their subjects up close, with a minimum focusing distance of 0.38m at all focal lengths throughout the zoom range. A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM) works in combination with a high-performance CPU and advanced AF algorithms to ensure accurate, silent and ultra-responsive autofocus. For those who prefer to maintain full control in every shot, full-time manual focusing allows photographers to precisely tweak or alter the focus of their shot at any time, even when AF is engaged.

The EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM is the latest lens from the elite L-series to offer Canon’s high-grade and user-focused design enhancements. The mechanical structure of the lens has been improved to offer enhanced zoom durability and greater shake and shock resistance within the lens barrel. The size of the lens has also been reduced by 10mm compared to the previous model, providing enhanced portability and greater convenience in everyday use. A new Zoom Lock lever also enables photographers to lock the zoom position at the extreme wide end to prevent damage to the lens in transit, while a water and dustproof construction² enables users to continue shooting in harsh conditions.

Canon today also launches the new EF 24mm f/2.8 IS USM and EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM – the world’s first 24mm and 28mm fixed wide-angle lenses to feature optical IS technology. Ideal for landscape and reportage, both lenses offer outstanding flexibility allowing photographers to shoot an even broader range of scenes and subjects – combining fast apertures with IS to enable sharp results when shooting handheld, even in low light conditions.

Offering an advantage of up to 4-stops over lenses without IS, both lenses are ideal for capturing more of the scene thanks to their wider focal lengths. Both feature a wide f/2.8 aperture, allowing photographers to explore shallow depth of field, or to shoot in lower-light conditions. Wide apertures and IS technology also make each lens ideal for shooting fast-moving subjects, while Canon’s advanced IS technology is able to detect intentional panning movement and automatically switch from Normal IS mode to Panning IS mode – helping users to capture movement with greater accuracy.

Silent, high-speed AF performance is provided by the inclusion of a ring-type USM and additional features including optimized AF control. Full-time manual focusing also ensures adjustments can be made even when AF is engaged, while a minimum focusing distance of 0.20m (EF 24mm f/2.8 IS USM) and 0.23m
(EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM) allows photographers to get even closer to smaller or more detailed subjects.

Both the EF 24mm f/2.8 IS USM and EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM feature redesigned optics to improve image quality and reduce the need for post-production. An aspherical glass moulded (GMo) lens element is incorporated to correct aberration throughout the optical system, while Canon’s optimised Super Spectra Coatings reduce ghosting and flare for stand-out image quality. Externally, both models also boast a number of design similarities with Canon’s professional L-series lenses, with a similar coating on the barrel and a similar design on the focus ring. A distance scale is also included to assist with landscape photography, while the compact design makes these lenses an unobtrusive addition to any kit bag.

EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM – key features
• All-new optical design delivers exceptional sharpness
• Ultra-low dispersion (UD) and super UD elements
• Fast f/2.8 maximum aperture
• Sealed against dust and moisture
• Fast, silent ultrasonic autofocus
• Manual focus override
• Nine-bladed circular aperture

EF 24mm f/2.8 IS USM – key features
• 24mm wide angle lens (38mm equivalent on APS-C sized sensors)
• Fast f/2.8 maximum aperture
• Up to four-stop Image Stabilizer
• Ultrasonic autofocus mechanism
• Circular aperture for soft background blur

Canon today unveils its new SELPHY compact photo printer, the SELPHY CP810, designed to make photo-lab quality printing on the move, or at home, quick and easy...

Canon today unveils its new SELPHY compact photo printer, the SELPHY CP810, designed to make photo-lab quality printing on the move, or at home, quick and easy. Replacing the SELPHY CP800, the new model offers a number of improvements, boasting a slimmer, compact and more portable design, expanded creative features and improved usability.

The SELPHY CP810 is ideal for those looking for a convenient printer that delivers high quality prints in less than a minute. The lightweight, portable design also provides a suitable option for business users who want to offer on-the-spot ID Photos or instant photo printing services.

Photos can be printed directly from a range of compatible memory cards, or from any PictBridge-compatible device, such as a camera or camcorder. The SELPHY CP810 can also print from USB flash memory sticks or from mobile phones via the integrated USB port, enabling instant output without the need for a computer.

For enhanced viewing and operation, a tilting 6.8 cm (2.7”) colour LCD screen features at the heart of the SELPHY CP810 operation. With support for 13 languages, images can be viewed easily and printed with a simple press of a button.

To produce the best prints, the improved Auto Image Optimizer function increases the quality of the print output compared to the quality of the original digital image, recognising scenes and improving the subject by making specific adjustments – for example controlling the brightness or contrast. In addition, a selectable Smooth Skin effect evens out skin blemishes for more flattering portraits, and manual brightness adjustment can be applied to fine-tune the prints produced.

Dye sublimation technology gives images superb depth and gradation of colour, providing a similar look and feel to traditional photo lab prints without the wait. Prints are dry and ready for handling the second they leave the printer, resistant to scratches, spills and fading. The printer is capable of producing postcard (148 x 100mm), L (119 x 89mm), and credit card (86 x 54mm) sized prints in super-quick time, on a range of Canon photographic media. The SELPHY CP810 also offers a range of image layout options, including the ID Photo layout which enables users to print a range of standard or custom-sized ID Photo images on a single sheet of paper.

The optional NB-CP2L battery pack provides the ability to print instantly whilst on the move. Ensuring that the printer is only portable when needed, a security cable, such as a Kensington lock, can also be attached to the added security slot on the printer body, while an optional Dust Protection Cover protects the printer and consumables when operating in dusty environments.

Owners of the new printer can also join the newly updated CANON iMAGE GATEWAY, an online facility for sharing photos and video, now providing up to 10 GB of personal storage capacity, perfect for storing many photos, even in full resolution. An easy interface allows users to search for images, create combined photo and movie Albums that can receive comments from friends, and to share Albums directly via email and Social Networking Sites.

The printer will be available in the UK from May 2012, priced at £99.00 RRP inc. VAT.

The PIXMA MX515 also features a Dual Function Panel, 6.2cm colour TFT display and Auto Duplex printing.

The new MX435 and MX515 are designed to offer greater flexibility in terms of where and how users print within the home office environment, with a number of connectivity features. Built-in Wi-Fi means that documents and photos can be printed from any room covered by an in-home wireless network. Both the MX435 and MX515 also offer mobile printing solutions. The Canon Easy-PhotoPrint App (for iOS and Android products) allows photo and document printing from, and scanning directly to, a mobile device.
One week after ICANN began accepting applications for new generic Top-Level Domains, the application system is said to be functioning without a hitch...

Marina del Rey, California… One week after the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) began accepting applications for new generic Top-Level Domains (gTLDs), the application system is said to be functioning without a hitch.

“I can state firmly that one week into the process, the application system for the new domain names is functioning just as it should,” said Rod Beckstrom, ICANN’s President and Chief Executive Officer. “This is a reflection of the careful planning, hard work and long hours our staff spent preparing for last week’s launch.”

At one minute past midnight (UTC) on Thursday, 12 January, ICANN began accepting applications for new generic Top-Level Domains, beginning one of the biggest changes in the Internet’s evolution.

The new program will greatly expand the current 22 Top-Level Domains (such as .com, .gov and .net) to include almost any word or name. It also allows, for the first time, non-Latin language scripts such as Arabic, Chinese and Cyrillic to be used in a gTLD.

“I couldn’t be more pleased,” said Michael Salazar, Director of the New gTLD program. “ICANN spent six years working to ensure it got this program right and we worked particularly hard to make certain the application portion of the program went smoothly.”

As of today, there are 25 successful registrants in the online TLD Application System. However, this number does not necessarily represent the total number of applications since each registrant can apply for up to 50 new generic Top-Level Domains.

The deadline to register in the TLD Application System is 29 March. If applicants are not registered in the system by that date, they will be unable to apply.

In early May, approximately two weeks after the new gTLD application window closes, ICANN will publish a list of the applications and who has applied for which domain name. Until then, ICANN will not comment publicly about any specific application, the total number of applications received, or who has submitted applications.

Initial processing of the applications is expected to be completed in mid-November 2012 and the first new generic Top-Level Domains are expected to be online sometime in early 2013.

If you’re thinking of applying for your own gTLD, be aware that, at a cost of $185,000 (£120,000) just to apply, obtaining one of the new names is a serious financial commitment!

I spent the weekend with Louise & Vernon in and around the Black Country...

I spent the weekend with Louise & Vernon. On Saturday morning Louise & I went to Solihull whilst Vernon played golf. In the evening we had a lovely meal at Prezzo in Bromsgrove.

On Sunday we went to the Black Country Living Museum, 1 mile north of Dudley town centre.

Over fifty historic buildings from all around the Black Country have been moved and authentically rebuilt at the open air museum, to create a tribute to the traditional skills and enterprise of the people that once lived in the heart of industrial Britain. Covering 26 acres of former industrial land, the museum transports visitors back in time from the modern exhibition halls to the canal-side village, where costumed demonstrators and working craftsmen bring the buildings to life with their local knowledge and practical skills.

Whilst not cheap, I can recommend Hobbs’ fish & chip shop! This 1930′s shop in the museum village sells traditionally cooked cod, roe and chips; reputed to be the best in the midlands, using beef dripping for frying.

Yesterday I went to the 2011 Forge Motorsport Summer Performance Car Action Day at the Castle Combe Circuit near Chippenham, Wiltshire....

Yesterday I went to the 2011 Forge Motorsport Summer Performance Car Action Day at the Castle Combe Circuit near Chippenham, Wiltshire.

The Drift Team were just starting when I arrived, taking the corners at high speed and at right angles to the tarmac, no doubt made more tricky by the fact that the track was wet from the rain.

During the afternoon the rain stopped and the sun came out. There were loads of performance cars to look at from the hundreds of car clubs that attended, and plenty of track action to see from the banking around the circuit.
